PES Member Society Spotlight

The IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES) is one of IEEE’s professional societies of which IEEE CSC is a member council. PES is focused on research, development, planning, design, construction, maintenance, installation, and operation of equipment, structures, materials, and power systems for the safe, sustainable, economic, and reliable conversion, generation, transmission, distribution, storage, and usage of electric energy, including its measurement and control. Thus, PES has several overlapping areas with the IEEE CSC, particularly in applying superconducting technologies in power and energy systems. P. J. Costa Branco and Kiruba S. Haran are representing the PES for the CSC for 2021. We develop advanced electro-mechanical energy conversion systems with superconducting technologies for cryogenic levitations bearings and full or partial superconducting synchronous and induction machines, designed and optimized for high specific power, aircraft, and wind turbines applications, in the E2TES group and Kiruba Haran group

In October/November 2020, the biennial Applied Superconductivity Conference (ASC 2020) was held virtually. Authors worldwide presented oral (in the video) and posters presentations to more than 1700 attendees. The ASC 2020 accounted for several interesting plenary speakers and young scientist vision plenaries, among several research areas, particularly in room temperatures superconductors and applications of high-temperature superconductors for power and energy applications. About 245 papers with extended content have been published to IEEE Trans. on Applied Superconductivity. These are available here.

IEEE CSC members might be interested in the upcoming conferences this year. Finally, IEEE CSC members may be interested in some tutorials and superconducting models posted on the HTSModelling website. Several model files are available at this site for different platforms, from superconducting models with different formulations to 2D and 3D finite element models of superconducting electrical machines.
