Biography

Giovanni Piero Pepe (Giampiero) is Full professor for Experimental Physics and Nanomaterials for Electronics and Energetics at the University of Napoli Federico II, while from 2011 to 2019 he has been Deputy Director of the Naples Unit of the Institute for Superconducting, Innovative Materials and Devices (SPIN), National Council of Research (CNR), Italy. GPP has more than 25 years experience in superconducting electronics covering mainly topics regarding Josephson effects and tunneling in superconducting devices, unconventional superconducting devices for quantum applications, advanced superconducting detectors and non-equilibrium superconductivity, cryogenics, and material science at low temperatures. During the last years GPP and his group were involved in a number of national and European projects concentrating on the development of superconducting (nano)devices for quantum communications. He has authored more than 160 papers in peer-reviewed journals. He worked in advisory boards of international conferences and workshops like ASC, ISEC, EUCAS, ICSM. From 2019 he is Chair of the European Society of Applied Superconductivity, and chairman and organizer of ISEC 2017 Conference in Sorrento, of WOLTE13 2018 Conference in Sorrento, and of WOLTE14 to be held in Matera, Italy. He was Chair of ESAS International Summer School on “New Trends with Superconducting Quantum Detectors” (Genova, 2013), of the Winter ESAS School on “Novel frontiers in superconducting electronics: from fundamental concepts and advanced materials towards future applications” (Naples, 2016), and co-chair of the National CNR Workshop on Single Photon Devices: the Italian perspectives (Roma, 2016). From 2019 he is Senior IEEE Member.

Biography

Dr. Mark Ainslie is a Lecturer in Engineering in the Department of Engineering, King's College London. His research covers a broad range of aspects of applied superconductivity, primarily focused on solving technical challenges related to high-field magnets, superconducting electric machines, and other superconducting power applications. His research brings together state-of-the-art materials and applied research, from fundamental materials science to numerical modeling to application design/testing.

Mark received the B.E. (Electrical & Electronic) & B.A. (Japanese) degrees from the University of Adelaide, Australia, in 2004; the M.Eng. degree from the University of Tokyo, Japan, in 2008; and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Cambridge, UK, in 2012. From 2017-2022, he was an Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Early Career Fellow in the Bulk Superconductivity Group, Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge, and his research focused on magnetization techniques for bulk superconductors to develop super-strength (5 T-class), portable magnets. Prior to this (2012-2017), he was a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellow in the same research group, investigating various aspects of superconducting electric machine design utilizing both wire- and bulk- forms of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) materials.

His research has been recognized by a number of awards and prizes, including the 2011 European Society for Applied Superconductivity (ESAS) Young Researcher's Award (Large Scale Applications), the Most Cited Paper 2015 (Modelling of bulk superconductor magnetization) in the Superconductor Science and Technology (SUST) 30th Anniversary Collection in 2017, and the International Cryogenic Materials Commission (ICMC) Cryogenic Materials Award for Excellence in 2021.

Biography

Luisa Chiesa is an associate professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Tufts School of Engineering. Her teaching interests include sustainable energy, thermodynamics and applied thermodynamics, cryogenic and superconductivity, strength of materials, mechanics of materials, and material science. Her primary research interest is superconducting materials for large powerful magnets to be used in particle accelerators, medical devices, and fusion energy machines. Her current research focus is the electro-mechanical behavior of superconducting materials for large magnets used in fusion power devices. Fusion reactors could play a key role in the power production of future generations. Powerful superconducting magnets are used to confine the plasma created in the fusion vessel. During operations, these magnets are subjected to extremely large forces that could reduce the overall performance of the superconducting material they are made of, jeopardizing the overall performance of the machine. To succeed in building such systems, it is critical to investigate the electro-mechanical properties of superconducting materials. Experimental and numerical work in this subject is performed at Tufts University, in collaboration with several national laboratories. This research is also of interest for other energy applications, such as superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) and superconducting transmission lines. These technologies could play a significant role in power storage and delivery, which are the backbone for the successful implementation of renewable energy sources. The measurements performed in Chiesa's laboratory are unique and focus mainly on superconductors, but the equipment available can be used to test different categories of materials.

Biography

Antonio Morandi holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering. Since 2006 he has been with the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Information Engineering where is appointed professor of Elements of Electrical Engineering, Electric Energy Storage and Applied Superconductivity. He is also supervisor of PhD programs on Applied Superconductivity. His research interests are on power applications of High-Temperature Superconductors and advanced energy systems. He has coordinated several research projects in this field funded by Public Agencies and by private companies and has contributed to the prototyping of superconducting power apparatus (FCL and SMES) and to the development of modelling and design tools. Antonio Morandi is the author of about 50 technical papers published in international journals and conferences. He is the inventor of two patents. He is a reviewer of research projects in the energy sector for the European Commission, the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities, and Research and foreign research institutes. He has given several invited talks at international conferences and research associations and has moderated several technical discussions. He is a member of the Italian mirror Committee IEC TC90 – Superconductivity and is a member of the International Steering Committee on HTS Modeling. He has been a member of program committees in international conferences. He has been the chairman of the 5th International Workshop on Numerical Modelling of High-Temperature Superconductors, Bologna-Italy, 2016. Antonio Morandi is a member of the ESAS board. He is a senior member of IEEE and serves as a technical editor for IEEE Transaction on Applied Superconductivity.

Biography

Dr. Frederic Trillaud graduated in electrical engineering from the French engineering school, École Spéciale des Travaux Publics (ESTP), in 1999. He received a master's degree in 2000 in electrical engineering from the University of Orsay France and his PhD in September 2005 on the “Study of the thermo-electronic stability of LTS conductors and contribution to the study of the thermoelectric stability of HTS conductors” from The Grenoble Institute of Technology (INP), France. Part of the PhD program, he visited from 2001 to 2003 the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL) in Tallahassee, FL, USA, as a research scholar. From 2005 to 2007, he was appointed post-doctoral associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to develop in collaboration with American Superconductor Corporation (AMSC) detection and protection systems for superconducting magnets. From 2007 to 2010, he was hired as mechanical engineer at the Ernesto Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBL) working on cryogenic systems, mechanical characterizations of superconducting cables and wires, development of data acquisition systems and electromagnet design. Since 2011, he has been working with the Institute of Engineering of the National Autonomous University of Mexico to develop superconducting power systems. In 2013, he was appointed lecturer at the graduate school of Engineering and research assistant professor at the Institute of Engineering and in September 2017, research associate professor.

He is currently leading various projects related to applied superconductivity for the power grid. These projects have included the development of superconducting fault-current limiters and power cables in collaboration with the Centro de Investigación y Desarrollo CARSO of the Mexican company Servicio Condumex S.A. and recently the laboratory GeePs of the French Engineering School CentrlaleSupélec. He has led the development of a superconducting undulator for the new generation of Indian free electron lasers in collaboration with the Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya University of Indore, India, and he has collaborated with the Department of Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Information of the University of Bologna on the characterization of superconducting commercial wires and tapes. Since 2013, he has initiated a project of a national stratospheric balloon in collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering and the national company REMTRONIC Telecomunicaciones. This project is now led by the Faculty of Engineering of UNAM includes the participation of the “Instituto Politecnico Nacional” and the “Instituto de Ciencias Aplicadas y Tecnología” of the UNAM. Since 2015, a couple of sub-orbital flights over the country of light payloads has been successfully carried out. He was member of two large international collaborations: the Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE) from 2009 to 2010 and the Japanese Experiment Module on board Extreme Universe Space Observatory (JEM- EUSO) from 2012 to 2015, and he has been actively part of two medium-size international collaborations, the Dark Matter in CCDs (DAMIC) and CONNIE since 2012 and 2016, respectively. Side projects have included the modelling of Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage systems (SMES), the design of a brushless motor for the compressor of commercial refrigerators produced by the national company Mabe through the leadership of the Faculty of Engineering (2011-2012) and the electromagnetic modeling of superconducting bulks in collaboration with the Université de Lorraine, France.
