Dr. Akihiko Kandori to IEEE Fellow!

As chairman of our Council on Superconductivity Fellow Evaluation Committee (FEC), I am pleased to announce the elevation of Dr. Akihiko Kandori to IEEE Fellow “for contributions to superconductive magnetocardiography and diagnostic technology.” Dr. Kandori (Central Research Laboratory, Hitachi, Ltd.) was listed in the IEEE Board of Directors December announcement of the 2020 IEEE Fellows Class. His nomination, review, and recommendation were conducted by our Council FEC.

Dr. Kandori successfully developed and applied superconducting electronics technology to cardiography, and brought it to practice by advancing detection, analysis, and diagnosis of heart disease in both adults and infants. He created an environment for applying SQUIDs to MCG and generated a community formed by specialists of both superconductivity and medicine that enabled significant progress in the technology's adoption in medical practice. The resulting MCG system, commercialized by Hitachi, received the 2004 R&D 100 Award as "the first noninvasive and non-contact imaging system to be able to detect cardiac electrical function in the human heart using a superconducting technique.”

Congratulations to Dr. Kandori from the CSC Fellow Evaluation Committee and the entire Council on Superconductivity community!

Sam Benz, Fellow Evaluation Committee Chair
